It used to be physician's could use the 80/20 rule to estimate revenues for their practice.  80% of revenue came from insurance companies, 20% came from patient payments (copays, deductibles, etc...)

A recent study of 2011 data for practices across the United States showed that 74% of revenues come from insurance companies today, while the remaining 26% come from patient responsibility.  This alarming trend is projected to continue to increase 4%-6% more over the next couple years.  in other words, as a physician, nearly 1/3 of your income will be coming from patients.

With healthcare reform, the trend is likely to continue.  Citizens in the U.S. will be required to retain insurance or they'll incur a penalty for not doing so.  Knowing these limits, insurance companies will provide low cost, high-deductible health plans to those individuals to circumvent the penalty and to qualify for the requirement.

As a provider, you have to change the way you handle patient payments and rely on them to keep the doors open.

Capturing patient payments upfront, at the time of the appointment is critical.  Afterwards, you need a diligent, strategic follow-up process to capture as much remaining patient balances within the first 120 days.  After  180 days, the value of each remaining $1.00 outstanding is only $0.30.
